Page 27 of 34 Under Kurtzman's guidance, Mad started by sending up other comics: Starchie, Superduperman, Mickey Rodent and others made appearances, and were greeted with glee among readers. When targets from comics ran out, there were always movie stars, pop singers, politicians and even British royals. This kind of iconoclasm was unusual enough, but Mad was also notable for the quality of its artwork. The EC stable included such luminaries as Wally Wood and Bill Elder, though perhaps the king of Mad-patented comedy was an occasional contributor, Basil Wolverton. His grotesque rendering of faces, every blemish highlighted in loving detail, was outstanding for its eccentricity, and much-imitated by up-and-coming cartoonists. |
