Sweeney Todd
Cover, Sweeney Todd, Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Charles Fox, 1878). Art: Anon. This 'penny dreadful' was the most notorious of the Victorian shockers.
The third kind of magazine, much more relevant to our investigation of the origins of comics, was humorous, These publications were once again a mix of text and illustrations, but generally much more visual than the other two genres. The boom was begun by Punch (1841), a satirical monthly following the tradition of the middle-class broadsheet. Political caricature was its stock in trade, though its reputation was also based on the quality of its ink drawings. Although most contributors saw little return for their association with the title, a few artists were simply too outstanding to remain anonymous -the most famous examples being John Leech and John Tenniel.
