The Kinder Kids
Lyonel Feininger was a rival to McCay, and was similarly experimental with panel layouts and strip design, though his strip career lasted less than a year. Feininger was also known for his cubist and Bauhaus paintings, and this was clearly a big influence on his work. His two masterpieces, 'The Kin-der-Kids' (1906) and 'Wee Willie Winkie's World' (1906), were ostensibly for children, but were enjoyed by adults for their playful expressionism. Buildings yawn, the sun flexes its ray-like hands and trees dance; all are rendered in a beautifully sombre palettes.
