Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend
'Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend' (New York Herald, 1905). Art/script: Winsor McCay. McCay also made a play for an adult readership with this often nightmarish offering.
Animals, too, were a popular feature of many of these early strips. Examples that placed them centre stage included Jimmy Swinnerton's 'Mr Jack' (1903), about a tiger who had an office job, a wife, and several admiring lady friends; Fred Opper's 'And Her Name was Maud!' (1904), about a taciturn mule who packed a mighty kick; and Billy DeBeck's 'Barney Google', which co-starred a racehorse called 'Spark Plug'.
