 Print by the great James Gillray entitled John Bull's Progress, 1793, a remarkably contemporary-looking commentary on the fate of the common soldier. Thus, in time, a network of print shops emerged, where the sheets could be produced and sold. By the 1820s, we can speak of a 'satire industry', based in London, but with branches in every major city in the country. As an industry, it had its Dickensian aspects: despite the new technology, most of the funny sheets were predicated on cost-cutting. Thus for most artists there was nothing very funny about the industry at all: they worked for very little pay in cramped conditions, and were usually not even allowed to sign their work.
